Kindle supplier offers plastic screen

December 19, 2009

Prime View International (PVI), which supplies companies that make e-book readers such as Amazon’s Kindle, is launching a plastic screen for the devices that will make them lighter and less prone to breakage. The Taiwanese firm currently supplies glass screens to its clients. Amazon is set to sell 3.5m Kindles globally and it is estimated that PVI will supply screens for two-thirds of the devices. If Amazon opts for the plastic screens it is likely to reduce the weight of the device from 500g to 330g.

PVI chairman Scott Liu tells the Financial Times: “We think this will be … very important for the educational market, because the student may drop [his or her device] more than [an] adult”.
